In the spotlight for Summer 2024 at Mount Eagle College are the Blackwell sisters, Shanika, Sandra, and Tameka, pursuing their dreams together in the Nursing Assistant Program. Each sister contributes unique strengths while sharing a common goal. Their mutual support enriches their learning journey and emphasizes the significance of family bonds. We celebrate their dedication, passion, and drive. The Blackwell sisters' story underscores the power of determination and the profound impact individuals can have in healthcare. We anticipate their ongoing success and contributions to the nursing profession with enthusiasm!
Attending MEC has been a transformative experience for Shanika, and her decision to enroll was deeply influenced by the warm and welcoming atmosphere created by the staff. From the moment she met them, she knew this was the right place; their amazing spirits and supportive nature truly resonated with her values.
Her passion for caring for others naturally led her to the Nursing Assistant Program. She has always been driven by a desire to make people feel valued and important, and this program is the perfect steppingstone toward achieving her long-term goals in healthcare. One of her most memorable experiences at MEC has been the camaraderie within her class. They have built a supportive and friendly environment, which has made her time at MEC even more enjoyable.
Outside of academics, she stays active by participating in community service, including feeding the homeless and volunteering at her children's school. Her biggest inspiration throughout this journey has been her twin sister, Tameka. As a stage four cancer survivor, Tameka’s resilience and determination to overcome life’s challenges are nothing short of remarkable. She continues to be a beacon of strength and perseverance for her.
Academically, one of Shanika's proudest achievements was graduating with an associate degree in Business Administration while making the Dean's List. Her favorite subject has always been math, where her aptitude for numbers shines.
For incoming students at MEC, her advice is simple: stay focused on your goals, avoid distractions, and make the most of your studies. If they’re taking the CNA course, she highly recommends Mrs. Cheryl for her engaging teaching style and valuable insights.
Before graduating, she aims to acquire all the necessary skills to advance in her career. Her ultimate aspiration is to become a Registered Nurse, dedicated to ensuring that her clients and residents feel happy and cherished.
Outside of her studies, she cherishes spending time with her kids, Jeremih and Genesis. Whether it’s going on vacations, enjoying cruises, or participating in school activities, family time is incredibly important to her. If given the chance to travel anywhere in the world, she would choose Hawaii. The allure of experiencing its culture and dancing in a hula skirt is a long-held dream of hers. What sets her apart is her genuine kindness, which some might even say is almost too generous, and her deep passion for singing.
Attending MEC with her siblings, including Sandra, who is the life of the party, has been a blessing. Sharing this experience with them has been one of the highlights of her college journey.
Sandra chose MEC because of the welcoming and enthusiastic nature of the staff, who made her feel valued and excited about joining the college community. Her decision to pursue the Nursing Assistant Program is driven by her goal to advance into a nursing degree program, reflecting her commitment to a career in healthcare. One of her most memorable college experiences has been gaining hands-on skills through lab sessions, which have significantly enriched her learning.
Balancing her demanding role as a full-time mother and grandmother, she manages her tight schedule with dedication and resilience. Sandra’s greatest academic achievement has been graduating with a 3.9 GPA despite experiencing profound personal loss, including the passing of her granddaughter and grandmother. This accomplishment highlights her determination and passion for the medical field. Among her favorite classes, the CPR course stands out for its blend of serious learning and engaging practice, allowing her to acquire lifesaving skills in a dynamic setting. She credits her instructor, Mrs. Cheryl, as a major source of support and inspiration throughout her college journey.

However, her voice doesn’t define who she is. She stands strong, confident, and brave, with a heart full of love to share. She believes everyone has a story and a purpose, and she hopes her story will inspire and positively impact others.
